
Professor Marek Kuźniak, PhD, D.Litt., is a linguist at the Institute of English Studies, University of Wrocław. He is the author of monographs and scholarly articles in the fields of semantics, translation studies, and the philosophy of language. In 2005, he published a book on the aphorisms by St. J. Lec from the perspective of cognitive linguistics (Combing ‘Unkempt Thoughts’. The Aphorism. A Cognitive-Axiological Study of Myśli Nieuczesane by St. J. Lec, Oficyna Wydawnicza Atut). In 2009, Professor Kuźniak authored a monograph on foreign words in English (Foreign Words and Phrases in English: Metaphorical Astrophysical Concepts in Lexicological Study, Wrocław University Press). His most recent publication, The Geometry of Choice: Language, Culture, and Education (Palgrave Macmillan, 2021), explores interdisciplinary approaches to decision-making processes.
Professor Kuźniak is a sworn translator of English. He is the author of Egzamin na tłumacza przysięgłego w praktyce. Język angielski. Analiza językowa (2016) and co-author, with Dr. Jan Gościński, of Tłumaczenie poświadczone ustne. Język angielski (2020), both published by C.H. Beck. Since 2009, he has been a member of the State Examination Board for conducting the sworn translator examination, appointed by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education (until 2017) and the Ministry of Justice (since 2017). In June 2024, he co-edited, together with Dr. Małgorzata Drewniok, the volume Applied Cognitive Ecostylistics: From Ego to Eco (Bloomsbury), which focuses on emerging research trends in stylistics from both linguistic and literary perspectives.
Professor Kuźniak serves as the Director of the Institute of English Studies at the Faculty of Languages, Literatures and Cultures, University of Wrocław, Moreover, he leads the Centre for Cognitive Research in Language and Communication, integrating interdisciplinary research in linguistics, cognitive science, and communication. He also oversees the organization and development of the Postgraduate Programme in English for Specific Purposes (SPAJS), aimed at training translators and language professionals. Professor Kuźniak is also a graduate of the John Galt School Poland 2022 program (Freedom and Entrepreneurship Foundation). As a member of the Steering Committee for the “Excellence Initiative – Research University” (IDUB), he contributes to shaping the scientific development strategy of the University of Wrocław.
Professor Kuźniak has written dozens of academic reviews, including a publisher’s review of Artur D. Kubacki’s monograph Tłumaczenie poświadczone. Status, kształcenie, warsztat i odpowiedzialność tłumacza przysięgłego (Warsaw 2012: Wolters Kluwer). He also reviews scholarly monographs for Cambridge University Press.
Professor Kuźniak has supervised nine completed doctoral dissertations and more than 500 bachelor’s and master’s theses. His current teaching and research interests include translation studies, cognitive science, the theory of ideas, as well as communication and management theory.
